People practising together in a quiet circle

The Practice

Pause. Breathe. Connect.

A simple place to begin

Returning to the present moment.

Rooted in the engaged mindfulness teachings of Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh, our practice begins in everyday life: a breath, a step, a meal, a conversation. We learn to care tenderly for what is difficult and to recognise the conditions of happiness already here.

Begin where you are. A minute is enough. These invitations are not a test, and there is no particular state you need to reach.

Pause.

Make room to stop and notice what you are carrying. A mindful pause offers space to meet your body and feelings with tenderness, rather than rushing to change them.

Breathe.

Bring gentle attention to the breath and body. With awareness, we can recognise tension, allow moments of rest, and touch the simple conditions that nourish joy.

Connect.

Return to yourself, to others and to the world around you. Through mindful walking, deep listening and loving speech, we cultivate understanding and compassion. Community is part of the path.

Everyday invitations

Small moments. A living practice.

01 / Pause.

A mindful pause

A little space in the midst of a full day.

  1. 1.Stop what you are doing, if it is safe to do so. Feel your feet on the ground or your body supported by a chair.
  2. 2.Notice what is here: a sensation, a feeling, a thought. There is no need to put it right.
  3. 3.Ask gently: what would support me in this moment? Let your next action begin from there.
02 / Breathe.

Coming home to the breath

Meet the breath as it is, without forcing it.

  1. 1.Find a comfortable position. Keep your eyes open or softly lower your gaze.
  2. 2.Notice one natural in-breath and one natural out-breath. You do not need to breathe deeply or hold your breath.
  3. 3.When your attention wanders, return kindly. If the breath feels uncomfortable, feel your feet or listen to sounds instead.
03 / Connect.

Walking with awareness

Let an ordinary walk become a moment of arrival.

  1. 1.Choose a safe, familiar place. Stand for a moment and notice the ground beneath you.
  2. 2.Walk at a comfortable pace. Feel the contact of each foot and notice the air, colours and sounds around you.
  3. 3.Pause to appreciate one thing that nourishes you. This can also be practised seated, noticing contact and your surroundings.
04 / Connect.

Listening from the heart

Make room for understanding before offering an answer.

  1. 1.With someone willing to join you, agree to take turns speaking and listening for a few minutes each. Either person may stop at any time.
  2. 2.Let one person share how they are, while the other listens without interrupting or trying to solve anything.
  3. 3.Thank one another, then exchange roles. Share only what feels comfortable; silence is welcome too.

Awaken Together
